Do you need the EA’s source code to back-test it?
No. A compiled .ex4 or .ex5 file can be back-tested and optimised in the Strategy Tester. The source is only needed if the EA itself must be changed.
Can optimisation make my EA profitable?
No. Optimisation can find settings that suit a strategy better, but over-optimising fits the past and fails on new data. The aim is robust settings, and a clear view of whether the strategy holds up at all.
What is out-of-sample testing?
Keeping part of the history aside, optimising on the rest, then checking the chosen settings on the unseen part. If results collapse there, the settings were fitted to noise.
